Abstract:This report discusses the state of the elderly, and the pattern and trend of aging in Sri Lanka, in the process identifying the broad challenges that the country is likely to face. It summarizes demographic trends based on population projections, presents the current state of the elderly in Sri Lanka and reviews sociocultural norms sucha living arrangements, poverty among the elderly and their sources of income, an overview of existing pension and old-age income support schemes, existing gaps, as well as policy recommendations. The report also discusses the implications of an aging population on labor force participation followed by policy recommendations to address potential labor shortages, and the impact of aging on health and long-term care costs and recommends effective responses to the needs of an aging population. |
