ILO Social Security Inquiry |
|
Project ID: SP-001 |
Status: Completed |
Reliable social security statistics are an important precondition for good governance and policy making. However, in many countries, the quantitative knowledge base on social security is incomplete and often does not follow international statistical standards, so ILO launched its Social Security Inquiry initiative to assist countries in improving their quantitative knowledge base on social security. As part of the initiative, IHP staff were tasked during 2005 with conducting this pilot project in Sri Lanka to test the feasibility of collecting and reporting routine statistics on social security and social protection activities in the country. The project involved using the ILO manuals to identify and collect the necessary data, and giving feedback to ILO Social Security Department on the problems and issues raised by the process. Areas for which statistics were collected and reported included all national pension schemes, transfer programmes, health, education and nutrition activities, and other worker protection programmes. ILO is using this experience to revise and finalise its future global data collection activities in this important area. |
