Curative Care Services Delivery and Non-communicable diseases in Sri Lanka: Assessment of burden, utilization and projections and future options |
|
Project ID: NC-005 |
Status: Completed |
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have emerged as the leading cause of death in Sri Lanka, and its most important health challenge. The importance of improving the polic response to NCDs was identified as a key finding in the World Bank Sri Lanka Aging Study, which IHP was involved in. This study undertook a systematic analysis using existing data of the current burden and trends of the major NCDs - ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancers and smoking - in Sri Lanka, the socioeconomic disparities in mortality from the diseases, the current system for treatment, and the impact of current trends on future resource needs. The study also examined future policy opitions, and for this modelled the impact of different intervention strategies on future mortality, as well as the costs of expanding secondary prevention for heart disease. The project complements the parallel project examining the institutional capacity for NCD policy responses in Sri Lanka. |
