World Bank Sri Lanka Ageing Study |
|
Project ID: AG-004 |
Status: Completed |
In 2005, the World Bank initiated this major study of the social and economic implications and impacts of ageing on Sri Lanka. IHP's major contributions to this study were to contribute the analyses of health and demographic issues. In addition, IHP researchers participated in the design and analysis of a special household survey of households with elderly people. Bank authors also heavily drew on earlier work led by IHP Fellow, Dr Rannan-Eliya, in their analysis of pensions policy in the country. In its main work for the health chapter of this study, IHP commissioned a number of projects, including an analysis of current NCD epidemic responses, a health expenditure projection model, and an analysis of census data on disability trends. The analysis of the NCD epidemic has shown that Sri Lanka is now experiencing an incidence of NCDs comparable to that of many developed countries, but highlighted the fact that mortality rates are even higher, probably because of a failure to invest in low-cost. effective medical treatments, particularly secondary prevention and primary care treatment. The results of the study were shared at a national workshop organised by the World Bank in Colombo on 9 September 2008. |
